The Press Complaints Commission

The Press Complaints Commission was established to monitor the press to ensure they maintain the highest professional and ethical standards.

They have issued a Code to self-regulate the industry and protects the rights of individuals.

Any individual can complain to the Press Complaints Commission following publication of an article on the basis that the publication has breached the Code.

The Code is open to interpretation and a bank of case law has developed following the Commission’s adjudications.

We have access to all these adjudications and are able to advise our clients on the likelihood of success of a complaint or alternatively the best way to defend such a complaint.

The sanction for breach of the Code involves the newspaper requiring to print in a prominent place the full adjudication of the Commission.

If you wish advice following publication of an article to either lodge a complaint with the Commission or alternatively to defend a complaint with the Commission then contact a member of our team.
